SuperCal SO4 vs. Cal-Sul on Soybean

The 'SuperCal SO4 versus Cal-Sul broadcast on soybeans' study evaluates these products' ability to enhance soybean seedling vigor, stand establishment and yield response. An 80-acre field was planted with soybean variety Pioneer 92BO5 (141,000 seeds per acre) and SuperCal SO4 at 300 lbs/A and 500 lbs/A versus Cal-Sul at 300 lbs/A and 500 lbs/A applied broadcast in 44 foot wide strips, 1,200 feet long. Strips were alternated in six replicates and comparisons were tracked throughout the growing season until harvest.

The average soil texture in these strips is fine and loamy, with an average CEC of 16 and an average pH of 6.2. The growing season temperatures were normal with several heavy rains following planting through the months of May and June. The late summer months of August, September and October were dry with ideal harvest conditions throughout late September and October.

Emergence, growth rate and stand establishment

To compare rate of growth and stand establishment, the population of plants that had reached the V3 stage 35 days after planting were counted and averaged (page 4). At V3 stage more plants per acre had reached this stage using SuperCal SO4 500 lbs/A than with the other treatments. This marks an increase over the other treatments suggesting that the rate of growth and stand establishment can be positively affected by using SuperCalS04.
The results for plant population that had reached V3 after planting reflects a positive difference between treatments. With SuperCal SO4 approximately 6,917 (5.5%) more plants per acre on average had reached V3 stage 35 days after planting versus the control. Also, SO4 allowed seedlings to be ahead of other treatments at the V3 stage as shown on page 4.

Yield results

The yield map (page 5) of the SuperCal SO4 study is a valuable tool to show the yield variances that occurred. However, the map by itself is difficult to interpret. For example, one does not see strips of green for SuperCal S04 treated areas and strips of red for control areas. Mapping software assigns a range of colors for yield levels and there may be no pattern related to the treatments. A more precise method to analyze the data is to use math and graph the results.
The line graph (page 6) shows how the yield monitor data in the map can be graphed into easier to understand smooth curves. The data shows that the average yield for SuperCal SO4 500 lbs/A was 64.7 bu/A, the midpoint average within the SuperCal SO4 monitor readings inside the green curve. The average for other treatments shifts to the left where the yield average is less, based on all of the monitor readings.

With treatment cost approximately the same, SuperCal SO4 gave an economic yield advantage over Cal-SUL at both the 300 lbs/A and 500 lbs/A application rates. SuperCal SO4 gave a 4.8 bu/A at 300 lbs/A and 8.3 bu/A at 500 lbs/A advantage over the control.

 

Statistics

The Duncan's multiple range test (DMRT) as shown on page 8, is used to determine if significant differences have occurred between treatments. This test indicates statistical separation between SuperCal SO4 at both the 500 Ibs/A and 300 lbs/A as compared to the control.

A statistical evaluation of the studies was conducted using the Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The DMRT allows you to evaluate statistical differences between treatments and the probability that those differences are real and not due to chance. The ninety-five percent level of confidence was used. If treatments are significantly different, they will be followed by different letters (a, b, c). This means that ninety-five percent of the time, under similar parameters, these differences among treatments should occur.
